This 80 year old gentleman of song has been singing for almost as long as he has been on this earth. He first took part in an Oireachtas competition in 1944, when he won first place in the senior men’s open sean-nós competition. He was a notable absence in the competitions for the ensuing 57 years, until 2001 when he once more took part in and won the senior men’s open sean-nós competition.

On this long overdue album we are given a taste of the depth of Máirtín Pheaits’ talent, from the calibre of his voice to the treasury of songs which he possesses. It features the songs mostly associated with him from the Connemara singing tradition, including Bádóirín Thír an Fhia, Ceaití an Chúil Chraobhaigh and Kathleen. Listening to his mellifluous tones, it is very hard to believe that the talented singer on this recording will soon become a hearty octogenarian.
