During his student years, he spent periods working in London, experiences that profoundly shaped him. He served as a teacher at St Mary’s College, Galway; St Mary’s College, Cashel; Belvedere College, Dublin; and Connacht College, Spiddal. In 1969, he was appointed lecturer in Irish at St Mary’s College, Limerick.
He was born in Moycullen, a partially Irish-speaking Gaeltacht area, in 1942.
