Johnny Chóil Mhaidhc (1929-2006) from Indreabhán, Connemara, was a well-known dramatist, actor and poet. He was an exponent of the agallamh beirte, or poetic dialogue, a genre that is particular to the Gaeltacht localities, and was one of the best oral poets of his generation. His prize-winning plays are noted for their humour and have been staged to packed halls all over the country. He appeared in a number of films, including Jim Sheridan’s The Field and Bob Quinn’s Poitín. He was a member of Aosdána and was conferred with an honourary Master’s Degree by the University of Galway in 2005.
