Fáinne Geal an Lae

Éilís Ní Dhuibhne

Memoir lightly fictionalised

This is a story about a young girl, Róisín, growing up in a suburb of Dublin, in the fifties and sixties of the last century. She lives with her father, mother, sister Brídín and brother Con on Castar Road, Ranelagh. She attends an all-Irish school in Dublin city centre. But Ranelagh was not the same then as it is now, a place associated with wealth and privilege. It was a mixture of different classes at that time: the working class, the middle class and, indeed, people who were struggling with poverty. Prosperity was rare in the area. Róisín gradually discovers this reality as the story unfolds, marking a significant moment in the young girl’s coming-of-age journey. “Fáinne Geal an Lae” provides a nostalgic recollection of Róisín’s formative years.
