This is the sixth book in the Rita series by Máire Zepf and Andrew Whitson, published by An tSnáthaid Mhór, a publishing house based in Belfast. In this book we learn more about the complexities of Rita’s relationship with her little brother (he who shall not be named) and find out about other aspects of Rita’s character.

In Rita agus an Lampa Draíochta (Rita and the Magic Lamp) our heroine goes on an Arabian-Nights-Style adventure on a magic carpet, while wishing for a beautiful palace full of gold, delicious food and fabulous clothes. Best of all, she doesn’t have to share it with anyone. That is, until her little brother decides that he has wishes of his own and he gets a hold of the magic lamp. Now the genie has a new master and Rita’s perfect plan starts to unravel.

As with all of the books in the Rita series, Rita agus an Lampa Draíochta is beautifully illustrated and full of pattern and detail on each page. Every family features a little sibling rivalry and this book explores this theme as well as showing the simple fun experienced by a brother and sister playing in the world of make-believe.
