In 1984 the University College Dublin Library bought the papers of Seán O’Riordáin, including his diary in which entries were recorded regularly from 1940 to 1977, the year of his death.
These diaries are now available in 49 copybooks or files. The diaries are one of the longest examples of regular, continuous writing that we have in Ireland in the twentieth century, in English or Irish.
Although entries from a small part of the diaries have already been published, it is vital that this material is published on a more complete basis to give a proper understanding of this impressive work, a work that gives an insight into the mind of a prolific writer, and which reveals Ó Riordáin as a witness to a turbulent period in the history of Ireland and the wider world.
Dr Pádraig Ó Liatháin is an assistant professor at Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge, Dublin City University, and studies in Irish-language literature from the 17th century to the present day. He is a former Irish language editor of Eighteenth-Century Ireland: Iris an dá Chúltúir . Cló Iar-Connacht published his critical edition of the poem ‘Eachtra Ghiolla an Amaráin’ by Donncha Rua Mac Conmara in 2018. He is also a co-editor of the following books Ar an imeall i lár an domhain: Ag trasnú tairseacha, staire, teanga agus litríochta (2021), Litríocht na Gaeilge ar fud an domhain I agus II (2016), and Ó Chleamairí Go Ceamaraí: Drámaíocht agus Taibhealaíona na Gaeilge faoi chaibidil (2021).
He is currently working on a major research project. i. to transcribe and print Seán O Ríordáin’s diaries, and the first volume Seán Ó Ríordáin: Na Dialanna 1 & 2, 1940, has now been published.
